A Desert Ride...
.
..

Here's the four P'shop sketches:

Yep, the image quality sucks, but for evaluation purposes,
it's just fine, it tells me what I need to know.
I am using the same sky in all, I'd pretty much decided on it
'cause it had nice things going on around the sides & top, but a convenient
vacant/open space in the middle.

Not enough interesting detail on the land...

There's a whole lot more detail in the land, but the lighting
just doesn't work for me...

The land? ..not interesting enough, and same lighting problem
as the previous one.

And the winner is....

There are a few light-struck portions in the distant mountains, not enough
to be a problem, and looking at the neg, I could see there
was plenty of interesting detail in the shadows.

Here's the full frame neg of the landscape:

Here's how it was exposed, dodging back the top:

The carousel horse, it was of course flopped for the print:

And here's the sky, full frame:

This is what was exposed for the print:

It all comes together like this...

A Desert Ride

One of the good things about doing the P'shop sketches is that
I can be lot closer to a 'keeper' print, much sooner.
If I start by exposing 3 or 4 sheets, maybe I can get a keeper by #2...
so #3 & #4? ...Hey, I can wing it a bit, try something else!
Below, is #4, with some more of the carousel image burned in at the upper left.

The image quality of this (above) is
'severely lacking, compared to the previous one', you say?
Yeah, it is a digital pic of the print, made w/ a Canon SX 100, from 3 feet away.
The first version, just above it, is a direct flatbed scan of the 16x20 print.
You recall earlier in this post I complained about digital image quality?
This a good example.
If you think "hey, you're comparing a really hi-end expensive film camera
to a consumer ($300) digital camera, that's not fair!"

Well, guess what? My Yashica-D TLR is almost as sharp as the Pentax...
and it cost all of $200.
And it doesn't need batteries, it will never freeze up, unless I go the Arctic.

You're gonna have to wrestle my traditional/film equipment
outta 'my cold dead hands' to paraphrase Charlton Heston, about gun rights.

"I'll be back" as the terminator said,...
in two weeks....'til then, enjoy life, and image making!
