At the bottom, the 'maze' w/ the figure walking in it, - a neg taken at Cliff House/Ocean Beach in SF - all the tourists go there... there is a small section of the beach, below cliff house, that you can shoot 'down' on, and at low tides, it's a marvelous 'glassy' surface of soft sand, that at the end of the day gets really interesting light - It's kind of a routine stop for me at the end of a day out.

This particular day, not only was the tide, and sand, and light really interesting, a couple of guys had drawn (w/ rakes - they just dragged them across the sand) this huge maze, in the soft/wet sand left by low tide. Nice. ....don't know what i'll do with it, but this image, i take... ....& take it quickly, cause only one person walks thru the maze, the waves will erase it soon, and the sun is getting really low, really fast....

The ladder, i found many months before, just stuck in the sand, by one leg..... I sifted thru proofsheets for a while... before I landed on combining the mazewalker, with the ladder....(the person IS walking the maze, in search of an escape, yes?....) That was enuf to start printing.... i look at a 'partial'......"""this is going somewhere!"""... what is next?..... Hhmmm....i have.... a person... seeking their way thru a maze( like "life", right?)...they find 'a ladder'...a 'form of transcendence'??....( i ask myself) "well... whatz next? - what amplifies/ expands this thought?"... .. the marin headlands are full of old 'batterys' - not electrical ones -military ones!...built from the early 1900's thru the second World War - they are abandoned, and left to rot... they 'crack', cause P3 all of the land there is "shifting", and i found one that you can crawl inside of, and shoot just the circular 'opening', and the 'crack' of.... again- i don't know how it 'connects' when i shoot it... i just know ""there is something 'metaphorical' here"""... .........and so that image ends up on the top of the ladder..... and i also add just a bit of rock detail on the 'horizon'.... ""there is a *way out*... transcendence is possible....
