And what stories does the land and ocean tell?......

 

If I remember the geology and natural history half-way right, during the last ice age, the California coast was a bit further west - there was alot less water in the sea, it was frozen in glaciers. When it all melted, sea level rose, and carved out the coast we have now.

The 'seastacks' at left ( in Trinidad, Humboldt County), are the remaining "tough parts" that haven't been reclaimed by the ocean yet.

 

 

The weather that rolls in off the ocean
makes life interesting, too.
